Feeling trapped in her abusive marriage, Gulsoom attempted suicide by setting herself on fire. Afghan women deserve to live free from abuse. » More and more Afghan women are resorting to suicide in order to escape abuse within forced marriages. The situation worsened last year when the Karzai government passed a law legalizing marital rape. For many women, death seems like the only way out. Women should not be treated as second-class citizens. But until the Karzai government enforces protection of womens' rights and outlaws domestic violence, the women of Afghanistan will continue to seek refuge through suicide.
